Italian car scrapyards recycled 85% of the cars they crunched up in 2007, according to the national federation of car scrapyards (CAR).
Each year in Italy around nine million vehicles are scrapped, Alfonso Gifuni, president of the association said.
In Italy there are between 1,500 and 1,800 companies that work in the sector of car scrapping.
An average Italian car scrapping company posts an average turnover of 4.0 mln euros ($5.8 mln) and scraps around 4,000 vehicles per year.
