AC Milan better than last season, says coach

AC Milan are better than last season, when they won the Champions League, even though they have not made any major signings this summer, Carlo Ancelotti told a press conference here on Monday.

"We already got four big reinforcements," the coach said when asked about the lack of transfer activity on the first day of Milan's pre-season training camp.

"We have Ronaldo, who can play the Champions League (after being cup-tied last season), (Massimo) Oddo, who did not arrive until January, and (Alessandro) Nesta and (Kakha) Kaladze, who were injured (at the start) of last year".

Milan Chairman Silvio Berlusconi said the club was in negotiations to land two top strikers and he is confident that "at least one will come and play with us".

The former Italian premier played down speculation that Barcelona's Ronaldinho or former Milan forward Andriy Shevchenko, now with Chelsea, might be among them.

He said that Barcelona have refused to sell Ronaldinho and that Chelsea had put up "insurmountable obstacles" to Shevchenko's return to the San Siro.

The Italian media have also linked Milan with Barcelona's Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o, Chelsea's Didier Drogba, West Ham's Argentina star Carlos Tevez and 17-year-old Brazilian talent Alexandre Pato of Internacional.

Berlusconi said his team's top priority in the upcoming season is to win the FIFA Clubs World Cup in Japan in December.

Italy striker Filippo Inzaghi said Milan's seventh European Cup-Champions League triumph had the squad fired up to bag more success.

"There is great enthusiasm," said Inzaghi, who scored the goals that gave Milan a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League final in Athens in May.

"It is fantastic to go back to work in an atmosphere like this".

Inzaghi said promoted Turin giants Juventus would be favourites for the Serie A title this year, in an interview published Monday in sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.

He said his former club will be able to devote all their energies to the Italian championship because they are not involved in European action.

Inzaghi scored 57 in four seasons at Juventus between 1997 and 2001 and won the 1998 league title in Turin.
