Italy's highest court on Wednesday upheld a conviction against a woman adjudged to have allowed her animals to turn her garden into a dung heap.

The Cassation Court said the case of the woman and her 30 cats and dogs was covered by Italy's law against noxious emissions.

The law not only regulates ''manufacturing that produces gas, vapours or smoke that damage the environment and affect people,'' but also ''all other bad smells deriving from human activities,'' the court said.

The Cassation judges upheld an order for the woman to pay a 150-euro fine and court costs as well as undisclosed damages to the neighbours who brought the case to court.
