Local grass roots groups opposed to major public works projects in northern and southern Italy have decided to create a common front. Groups opposed the Alpine high-speed train (TAV) tunnel and the Messina bridge linking Sicily to the mainland will meet on Monday to hammer out the details of 'twinning' their protests.
The meeting will take place in the Susa Valley town of Condove, near where the TAV tunnel is set to be bored, and the next day a joint press conference will be held to illustrate their joint plans and objectives.
The first demonstration of "reciprocal solidarity" will see a delegation of mayors from the Susa Valley take part in an anti-bridge rally in Messina on January 22. Organizers of the north-south union said their efforts would not be limited to just the bridge and tunnel but expand to the government's whole public works program.
