Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani is set to design a special AIDS charity edition of top British newspaper The Independent. Simon Kelner, editor of the Independent, said "Giorgio Armani will bring his special, personal vision of the world, and his unique creative vision to the newspaper's pages".

Kelner said he expected "spectacular visual pleasures" from the special edition, which will give half its sales to the AIDS in Africa campaign RED.

The Armani-designed edition, on newstands on Thursday September 21, will contain articles on Africa's AIDS plague by celebrities including George Clooney, Leonardo Di Caprio, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Andriy Shevchenko, Ashley Judd and Beyoncé Knowles.

The Independent will also offer an Armani-styled commemorative poster of the event, which follows a similar initiative in May when the paper was edited for a day by popstar and charity campaigner Bono.

Bono's Independent sold 70,000 more copies than its usual circulation.
