Italian astronomers have discovered a new star using a remote-controlled telescope via Internet connection, a statement released by the research group said on Thursday.

Astronomers at an observatory in the northern ski resort of Cortina D'Ampezzo named the star Sn2008ig.

The telescope used to sight the star was based in Australia and activated via an Internet link, the scientists said.

Sn2008ig is a supernova, a stellar explosion which occurs at the end of a star's lifetime.
