Bad financial year for Rai

State broadcaster RAI saw losses of 69 million euros in 2006 for its TV division and more than 80 million euros for the whole group, its worst performance in 13 years, CEO Claudio Cappon reported on Friday.

In an interview published by the Corriere della Sera daily, Cappon blamed "extraordinary circumstances" for the losses and said operating management was better than forecast.

Looking at the situation at RAI in general, Cappon observed that "company governance is inadequate to manage change. This is an anomaly for an industrial reality".

Cappon also complained that "untouchable editorial areas" existed in RAI and said "this is where we must intervene to recover out legitimacy as a public service".
