Baldini to seek DNA doping test

Top Olympic fencing hopeful Andrea Baldini said on Monday he will ask for a DNA test after his B urine sample also tested positive for a banned substance.

The Italian Fencing Federation (FIS) said in a statement that it was ''disappointed to learn of the second result and remains shocked about a situation which involves an athlete who had always stood out for his sportsmanship and correctness''.

FIS added that it would back Baldini's request for DNA tests on the two urine samples taken from the 23-year-old champion at the European championships in Kiev last month.

However, it is unlikely that this will take place in time for him to take part in this month's Beijing games.

News last Friday that Baldini had failed a doping test on his first sample led to his being automatically suspended by the Italian Olympic team.

He was replaced by European champion Andrea Cassara'.

Baldini won silver for the foil at the world championships in 2006 and 2007 and is currently ranked No.1 in the world. He had been a favorite to win the gold in Beijing.

Baldini was the second member of Italy's Olympic team to be barred from competing after failing a dope test.

World road race cycling champion Marta Bastianelli, 21, tested positive for a banned substance found in diet products last week.

The tests on Baldini's urine samples were carried out by the Anti-Doping Department at Prague's General Faculty Hospital.

Baldini has been summoned to appear before the Italian Olympic Committee CONI on Thursday to explain his position and statement he has made to the press.

CONI Chairman Gianni Petrucci on Monday reiterated that ''whoever makes a mistake will be sent home. We will be inflexible about this (doping)''.
