Italian food multinational Barilla is preparing to sell the German bakery chain Kampas which it acquired in 2002, according to local press reports.

Sources quoted by Financial Times Deutschland said that Barilla had asked a Frankfurt merchant bank to find a buyer for the German breadmaker.

According to the sources the buyer could be a institutional investor.

Barilla acquired Kamps for just over 1.8 billion euros through Fin.ba Bakery Europe AG, a new company set up with Italian lender Banca Popolare Lodi, which held a 49% stake.

At the time of the deal, Barilla agreed to pick Kamps' accumulated debt of 770 million euros.

Kamps in 2006 had a trading profit of 67 million euros from a turnover of 1.2 billion euros.
