Bets only on runners-up

Italian bookmakers are now only offering odds for second place in the Serie A championship, the SNAI betting organisation said Tuesday.

SNAI said that as things stand, with Inter Milan 11 points ahead of Roma and 12 in front of Juventus, it cannot give ''attractive or dignified'' odds for scudetto fancies other than Inter.

It said it would review the scenario if Inter's lead is cut ''over the next few weeks''.

For the moment, Italian punters will only be able to have a flutter on the runners-up, SNAI said.

Coming second is important because it means automatic qualification for the group stage of the Champions League, without going through the preliminary round.

Roma, despite a recent slump, has slightly better odds of 1.7/1 while Juventus is being quoted at 1.95/1.

On international online betting sites, however, Roma and Juventus fans can still get title odds.

One of the most popular sites, totesport.com, gives Roma a 12/1 chance of landing the title while Juve is a 20/1 gamble.

But even totesport reckons Inter have the championship virtually wrapped up. It is quoted at 1/66.

Serie A has played 23 games and there are 15 matches left until the last day of play on May 18.

Inter had an 8-point lead going into last weekend.

It beat Livorno 2-0 at home while Roma lost 1-0 at Juventus thanks to an Alessandro Del Piero free-kick, widening the gap to 11.

Next weekend could see Juve leapfrog Roma, pundits say, since they host lowly Reggina while the Romans travel to fourth-placed Fiorentina.

Inter have a home game against the Sampdoria of in-form ex-Italy striker and reformed 'bad boy' Antonio Cassano.

Roma travel to Inter on February 27 while Juve visit Inter on March 22.
