Operators in tourism-related businesses are pessimistic about this year's summer holiday season which they say began worse than last year, sector sources said on Tuesday.
According to a study by the Fipe-Comcommercio retailers' association, fewer foreigners and even fewer Italians are travelling in Italy and those who are tend to keep a close eye on their budgets.
The study predicted that turnover from the summer season will decline by some 7% over last year, the result of 28 million less customers of Italy's many bars, restaurants, bathing establishments, discos and Alpine retreats.
Some 58% of Fipe-Comcommercio's members did not expect the season to improve this month or next.
