Catania name 'Spiderman'

Ex-Inter and Italy goalkeeper Walter 'Spiderman' Zenga has been named coach of Serie A strugglers Catania.

Zenga, once one of the world's top keepers, replaces Silvio Baldini who was sacked following Sunday's home loss to Torino.

''It will take enthusiasm, courage and faith to hold on to a place in Serie A,'' said Zenga, 48, who is making his debut as a Serie A manager.

''I have those qualities and so have the team''.

Sunday's relegation face-off left Catania in a four-way tie for third from bottom, with seven games to go.

Torino moved five points clear of the drop zone.

Zenga, who has won coaching honours abroad including the Serbian league and cup double with Red Star Belgrade, said he had ''the utmost respect'' for his predecessor Baldini and would talk to him as soon as he could to ''capitalise on his experience''.

The Inter great, who is currently a RAI TV pundit, has only worked in Italy once as a coach, with semi-professional Brera in 2000-2001.

He got his first coaching break with Major League Soccer side New England Revolution in 1999, after two years keeping goal there after the end of his Italian playing days at Sampdoria and Padova.

Zenga had a go at acting after hanging up his gloves but his foray into Italian TV only produced a short-lived soap opera with his then girlfriend.

After Brera, he moved on to National Bucharest, Steaua Bucharest and, in his most successful coaching spell, double-winning Red Star Belgrade in 2004-2005.

He reportedly had to leave Belgrade because his wife spoke disparagingly of Serbian life and the people there.

Never one to duck a challenge, Zenga headed off to Turkish minnows Gaziantepspor but lasted only 17 matches.

Last year he briefly coached United Arab Emirates club Al Ain FC before another short stint, at Dinamo Bucharest.

During his playing career the 'Uomo Ragno' (Spiderman) turned out 328 times for Inter from 1982 to 1994, winning the scudetto in 1989.

At the peak of his playing days the flamboyant Zenga was a regular TV celebrity guest and a favourite with the paparazzi.

Zenga won 58 Italy caps between 1985 and 1992.

He played every game at the 1990 World Cup, where Italy came third, and kept five straight clean sheets - a record that still stands. Zenga was named UEFA's Goalkeeper of the Year.

Zenga was renowned for his cat-like reflexes and command of the penalty area. But he occasionally lapsed on crosses - like the floater that allowed Argentina's Claudio Caniggia to ghost in at the far post and end his remarkable 1990 run.

The goal, still a nightmare for Azzurri fans, threw a late lifeline to a Maradona-led but lacklustre Argentina.

The World Cup holders went on to beat tournament favourites Italy on penalties but then lost to West Germany in the final.
