Changes ahead for Venice's water taxis

Plans are under way to revamp water taxi service in Venice with a 30-euro limit on fares within the historic center, Deputy Mayor Michele Vianello announced on Friday.

Vianello has drawn up three proposals, two which will be presented for approval to the city government and one to the city assembly.

In the first the deputy mayor proposes to issue between 60 and 80 new licenses which will be limited to just taxi services, as opposed to the old license system which let operators choose between normal taxi service for individuals and water taxi rental for groups.

The second proposal deals with creating new taxi stands just for taxi service and the third revises the fare system.

The new fares will be posted in full view of passengers and set a maximum limit of 30 euros for two people travelling in the center center.

According to Vianello, the changes ''will create two services which the city currently doesn't have: a taxi service for residents and a rental system for tourists''.

There are currently 193 licenses to operate water taxis in Venice.
