China shelves Fiat Panda cloneFlash News - Chinese automaker Great Wall announced on Tuesday that it had for the moment shelved plans to introduce its first compact car, the Peri, until it resolves its legal dispute with Fiat for allegedly copying its popular Panda model.

Fiat took legal action against Great Wall both in Europe and China after the Peri was presented at the 2006 Bologna Motor Show because it appeared to be a clone of the Panda, its best-selling model in Europe's so-called Segment A market.

Speaking after the Bologna preview, Fiat chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo said: "If anything, they demonstrated that they have good taste".

Great Wall is reported to have sunk almost $40 million into the development of the Peri.
