Mayors Choice award goes to Carpineta Fontalpino winery - The Carpineta Fontalpino winery in Castelnuovo Berardenga (Siena) was awarded the gold medal in the international Mayor's Choice competition.
The award is presented by Citta' del Vino, an organization that concentrates on smaller wineries that produce less than 20,000 bottles per label.
The competition held in Monreale, Sicily, saw the participation of 741 wines from all over the world.
The winery was recognized for their IGT red wine 'Do fana'. The award ceremony was held in Rome's Campidoglio square and was presided over by vice-mayor Maria Pia Garavaglia.
Mayor's Choice is the only international oenological competition that insists on collaboration between the winery and the government of the city in which it was produced. The idea behind the competition is to create a wine that can become a type of calling card for the region.
Carpineta Fontalpino is owned and operated by brother and sister Gioia and Filippo Cresti. The winery covers more than 14 hectares and produces 50,000 bottles annually for sales profits of 350,000 Euro.
