Italy's commuter trains have been dubbed 'Dingoes'.

The name of the Australian wild dog was chosen by a poll of primary school students.

The schoolkids, whose suggestions were approved by rail authorities Friday, were asked to give animal nicknames to Italian trains which have so far been without a name.

The other winning names included, for Italy's new generation of high-speed trains, Cheetah and Gazelle.

Italy has a tradition of colourful names for its trains.

Past favourites include Tortoise, Cayman, Crocodile, Harlequin and 'Settebello', the top card in the popular Italian card game Scopa.
