Two Milan newly-weds on Sunday became the first couple ever to hold a wedding reception on one of the city's historic trams.

Journalist Stefania Malacrida, 36, and pharmaceuticals consultant Elia Rosetta, 37, invited 24 guests to their mobile wedding banquet aboard the dark green tram, which had been festooned with orchids for the occasion.

Two chefs cooked and two waiters served the eight tables as the tram travelled on a scenic route through Milan city centre, taking in its most impressive sites.

''The tram is a metaphor for travel, life and marriage,'' explained the bride, who was engaged to Rosetta for 19 years.

''We are very used to travelling for work and we liked this idea of climbing aboard with friends and relatives, taking our places and heading off into the future,'' she added.

Wedding guests said the unusual reception was ''much better than the usual stuffy lunches in posh restaurants''.

Milan public transport company ATM began hosting catered parties on two of its trams a year ago at an average cost of 65 euros per person, but passengers usually use the service to celebrate birthdays.
