A controversial crucified frog sculpture on show at Bolzano's Museion modern art museum may soon be removed, the provincial government said Tuesday.
The sculpture by late German artist Martin Kippenberger has been at the centre of furious polemics since it went on display three months ago, with critics complaining it offends the sensibility of Alto Adige's 99% Christian population.
The work features a a warty, pop-eyed amphibian nailed to a cross with a frothing mug of beer in one hand and an egg in the other.
The provincial government, which finances Museion and has a majority on its governing board, said it was due to meet museum officials on Thursday, when it would ask for the work to be removed.
''This decision does not represent a concession to external pressure nor is it the consequence of attacks on artistic freedom,'' said the provincial government.
The province goes to the polls for local elections on October 26.
