The brother of king Hussein of Jordan, who is a patron of culture in Amman today, is the guest of honour of the international convention on techniques of restoration in Palermo, in which experts from 20 Mediterranean countries will participate from October 18 to 21.
Organised by the regional restoration centre, directed by Guido Meli, with the cooperation of Iccrom and the high patronage of UNESCO, the convention will assess the progress, difficulties, achieved results and targets still to be reached in the most renowned archaeological areas in the world, all included in the Mediterranean basin.
These include the mythical city of Petra, the ruins of Cyprus, various Lebanese sites, and the wonderful ruins of Mesopotamia in Iraq, some bombed during the ongoing war.
Father Michele Piccirillo, leader of the Franciscan Community in Jerusalem, one of the major experts on Arab mosaics, will attend the convention, along with Fathi Saleh, president of Herimed, Christiane Nasser, from the Palestinian restoration centre, and experts from Bosnia, Montenegro, Croatia, France, Israel, Cyprus, Spain, Slovenia, Turkey, Morocco, Malta, Portugal and Jordan.
From the convention, suggestions will emerge for the drafting of a chart of the risks in the Mediterranean and an assessment will be made on the latest discoveries of advanced technology, applied to restoration and to the preservation of the Mediterranean heritage.
