De Biasi returns to Torino as Novellino falls

Serie A club Torino on Wednesday sacked coach Walter Novellino and brought back former manager Gianni De Biasi for the third time.

Novellino had been under heavy pressure after high early-season hopes turned sour.

The Turin outfit sank to 14th slot, four points above the drop zone, with a 3-0 defeat at Genoa Sunday.

De Biasi, 52, had two terms in the Torino hot seat between 2005 and 2007.

He led Juventus's cross-city rival back to the top flight in 2006 and was sacked after a poor run only to be called back to save the club from relegation late last season.

He is returning to Italy from Spain, welcoming the chance to leave financially strapped Levante, bottom of the Liga and apparently doomed for relegation.

Novellino, 54, had led four teams into Serie A before joining Torino from Sampdoria last summer.

The former Torino midfielder, who won an Italy cap in 1978, had five good years with Sampdoria, steering the Genoa side very close to a Champions League berth in 2005.

Novellino is the 11th Serie A coach axed this season after Fernando Orsi at Livorno, Massimo Ficcadenti at Reggina, Andrea Mandorlini at Siena, Marco Giampaolo at Cagliari, Luigi Cagni at Empoli, Stefano Colantuono at Palermo, Nedo Sonetti at Cagliari, Renzo Ulivieri at Reggina, Domenico Di Carlo at Parma and Francesco Guidolin at Palermo (where Colantuono returned on March 24).
