An Italian court has ordered French actor Gerard Depardieu to pay 1,500 euros in damages to a young Italian paparazzo who he headbutted in a Florence street in October 2005.
Finding the cinema star guilty of making threats and causing bodily harm, the court also issued Depardieu, 59, with a suspended 800-euro fine.
Photo-reporter Paolo Orlandi had been taking long-range photos of Depardieu with an unidentified young woman while the pair were shopping in the city's San Lorenzo market.
Orlandi said that Depardieu had called him over just before going into the Medici Chapels and then headbutted him, keeping his hands in his pockets.
The reporter was treated for bruising on the forehead at a local hospital and decided to press charges.
Depardieu in turn took the reporter to court for harassment, and Orlandi paid out a 258-euro fine to the actor.
The star of films including Francois Truffaut's Last Metro, Peter Weir's Green Card and Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900, Depardieu is a frequent visitor to Italy.
The actor bought a vineyard on the southern island of Pantelleria with former on-and-off-screen companion Carole Bouquet.
