Former Juventus and Italy world champion goalie Dino Zoff and his wife were mugged in Rome during the night near the capital's Foro Italico sports complex.
Police sources said the 1982 world champion and former Italy coach was approached by four individuals who forced him to hand over an estimated 1,000 euros in cash, watches and cell phones.
It is still not known whether the four were armed or what arms they may have used.
Zoff, now 64, was the captain of the Italy squad which won the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
Considered one of the best goal keepers of all time, between 1972 and 1974 Zoff set the record for the longest playing time without allowing goals in international matches: 1,142 minutes.
He also ranks second, behind Paolo Maldini, for the number of appearances with the national side.
After retiring, Zoff stayed at Juventus and coached the team from 1988 to 1990, the year he was sacked despite winning the UEFA Cup.
He then moved to train Lazio of Rome and became the club's chairman in 1994.
In 1998 he took control of the national team and led it to a second place in Euro 2000.
After a brief return to Lazio, Zoff helped save Fiorentina from relegation in 2005 but was not retained.
