Europe has pointed the way, Frattini

Europe has pointed the way out of the global financial crisis, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Monday.

Frattini said the plan agreed by eurozone leaders Sunday had ''paved the way'' for other European Union members to adopt similar moves at a meeting of the 27 EU leaders on Wednesday and Thursday.

''It's in the interest of all the countries to accept this proposal,'' Frattini said at a meeting of EU foreign ministers here.

Key points in the plan were to get banks lending to each other again and injecting liquidity where needed, Frattini said, adding that Italy was ''in a better position'' because of the fluidity of its system and last week's government decree to provide banks cover.

The EU should now enact the ''serious and ambitious'' rescue plan with ''concrete'' moves, he said, noting that stock markets were already rallying strongly.
