Even millionaires are entitled to alimony, Italy's top court ruled on Friday.
Reversing a ruling by a Venice court, the Cassation Court said a husband identified as Carlo F. should continue to pay his wife 1,200 euros a month even though she had two million euros in the bank.
The Venice court had ruled in favour of Carlo F. who pointed out that his wife could live on the 4% interest from the divorce settlement, which split the couple's assets down the middle.
The high-court judges took issue with the Venice decision to let the husband off because his wife did not have a ''glamorous'' lifestyle but only a ''high-living'' one.
''High and glamorous lifestyles are conceptually ambiguous terms,'' it said.
The Venice court was ordered to reconsider its verdict.
