F1: ‘I have a job to finish’

Ferrari's Michael Schumacher was refusing to think about his future on Monday as the Formula 1 world wondered what the most successful driver ever could possibly do next .

A day after announcing his retirement from racing at the end of the 2006 season, the German appeared completely focused on the problem of winning the three races he has left and grabbing his eighth world title .

"I just want to think about the immediate future, the three races that remain. There's a job here that needs to be finished," he said .

Although it is known that Schumacher will stay with Ferrari in some capacity next year, so far neither the driver nor the team have given any hint about what role he will have in the Italian team .

Some pundits have suggested he might act as a technical director, or 'super-consultant' to the team, bringing to bear the experience he has gathered through 11 years of driving and tuning Ferrari cars .

But Schumacher gave the impression of not being sure himself what he would do .

"At the moment I don't want to think about the past or the future. We have three races now that we must make the most of. All the rest is on hold for the time being." Referring to his motives for retiring now, as opposed to a year or so later, the star reiterated what he said at Monza on Sunday, hinting at a wilting will to win .

"I'm not getting any younger and naturally I asked myself how much energy, strength and motivation I could have next year" .

The driver showed no signs of regretting his decision to quit the sport that has made him a household name and thanked Ferrari for allowing him complete freedom in deciding when to leave .

"I'm happy to have been able to take this decision alone and without pressure," he said .
