New 'Pirate' radar emits zero electromagnetic radiation - The first two Eurofighter F. 2000 Typhoon jets recently arrived at the Italian Air Force base in Grosseto.
The fighter planes are the first to have Galileo Avionica's 'Pirate-IRST' radar aboard. The aircraft will operate from Grosseto's military base and follow the updated European Eurofighter jets standards.
According to a Galileo press release, the 'Pirate' has all of the same functions of traditional radar without emitting electromagnetic radiation. It is also able to detect heat from its targets.
Taken together, these qualities represent a significant increase in efficiency for the fighter jets.
Pirate's most original aspect is its ability to operate a completely stealth mission.
The radar is quite small and is inserted on the aircraft's control panel, while the sensor is attached to the fuselage.
Galileo Avionica is the prime contractor of the EuroFirst consortium comprised of Thales in the U.K. and Tecnobit in Spain.
Galileo Avionica s commission for the 'Pirate' radar was approximately 200 million Euro.
