Italian swimmer Alessia Filippi on Friday won the gold medal in the 800m freestyle event at the European championships.
Italy now has two gold medals, seven silver and three bronze.
Filippi's win automatically qualifies her for the Beijing Olympics this summer.
''This is a great achievement for me. Let's hope we can repeat this in the 4x200m freestyle relay,'' Filippi said after the race.
The Rome native won with a time of 8'23''50, beating the previous Italian women's 800m record of 8'28''73.
Erika Villaecija Garcia was second and Cornelia Potec placed third.
