A Mafia boss killed in a police shoot-out Monday managed to swallow six secret messages before he was felled, an autopsy revealed on Friday.
Daniele Emmanuello, a top central Sicilian boss, burst out of his country hide-out when police surrounded it but only managed to run 30 yards before a police marksman shot him in the back of the neck.
He died instantly.
Friday's autopsy found three so-called 'pizzini' (Mafia messages) in his wind-pipe and three in his stomach.
Police did not say whether they were legible or not.
