Four people were killed and 20 others injured in a head-on crash between a bus and a truck near Selva di Fasano, near the southeast city of Brindisi.
Police said the accident took place on route 172 and that the bus was carrying elderly passengers while the truck was transporting scrap metal.
Selva di Fasano is a popular resort and is the highest town in the province of Brindisi, some 400 meters above sea level.
It also hosts the Safari Fasanolandia, one of Europe's biggest zoos, where visitors remain in their vehicles and the animals wander free.
