Galileo Avionica equipment for Cosmo SkyMedThe Cosmo SkyMed space mission is counting on equipment furnished by Galileo Avionica, a Florentine company in the Finmeccanica group which is a leader in space exploration technology.

Solar panels, stellar sensors, regulation units and distribution of power for the platform and radar, are a series of products that Galileo Avionica has developed for this particular project.

The Vandeberg, second satellite in the Cosmo Skymed program, was recently launched in California. The program is the most important mission ever taken on by Italy.

The program is both civil and military in scope and cost more than one billion euros. It was created thanks to a collaboration between the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Defence Ministry.

Cosmo SkyMed, when completed, will be an Italian constellation of four satellites maintained in 'low orbit' equipped with all-weather radar able to collect better environmental data.

The system will essentially be dedicated to public safety, in order to monitor the environment and the climate, to prevent catastrophes, monitor the coastlines, and protect the water resources in the Mediterranean area.
