Gucci sets sights on e-commerce in IndiaThe Gucci fashion house will soon up its presence in India where it will concentrate primarily on e-commerce.

The information was released recently at the group's Milan presentation of the first nine months of 2007. According to managing director Mark Lee: ''sales saw a 10% jump. The objective is to close the year out with more two-digit growth''.

Impressive results also came in from China, where in 2006 Gucci saw a 69 percent increase in sales. However, the group has chosen to focus on India rather than China, where it already has 16 stores.

''We opened our first store in Mumbay last September. Covering a 340 square metre area, it is the largest luxury store in India. Another three stores are to open soon two in New Delhi and one in Bangalore. India is seven or eight years behind China but step by step it will become the market of the future,'' Lee said.

Lee went on to add that ''retail is not just stores, but includes e-commerce as well and where Gucci is the sector leader.

''We launched in America in 2002, in 2003 in the UK and today we are present in 10 countries including Italy. Last year we saw a 65% increase in sales''.
