Heat wave sends power consumption to all-time high

The current heat wave sent power consumption to a record high on Wednesday, beating the mark set in June last year, power distributor Terna said.

At noon Italy was consuming 56,120MW of electricity in order to power air conditioners, refrigerators and fans, Terna said.

But it stressed that there was no need to worry about power outages.

"The reserve margins are adequate and the situation is under control," it said.

The previous all-time record was set on June 26, 2006 when power consumption hit 55,600MW.

Terna added that consumption might go higher in the next few days with few signs of let-up in the broiling heat.

On Tuesday Civil Protection chief Guido Bertolaso said "consumption appears to be peaking but we still have reserves".

With temperatures hitting the top 30s in many cities, the civil protection department issued heat warnings for Bologna and Pescara on the Abruzzo coast.

The 'perceived heat' in the Abruzzo city will be 41 degrees C today.

On Friday temperatures will rise close to 40 in Florence, Verona, Brescia, Milan, Turin, Rome and Naples, the Italian weather office said.

The first heat-related deaths were reported late Monday: a 78-year-old woman on a beach near Venice, a 34-year-old alcoholic in Milan and an elderly man in the same city.

Health Minister Livia Turco on Tuesday urged employers to let their staff take off their ties and dress more casually in order to save energy and fight global warming.

Two weeks ago fuels giant Eni unveiled an optional 'no tie' policy for the same reason.
