The Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa is taking part in a European HIV research project.
They are now part of the ''Thinc'' research team, financed by the VII Programma Quadro, coordinated by Zeger Debyser of the University of Leuven.
The goal is to develop new pharmaceuticals against HIV that can treat AIDS all over the world.
The most utilized treatment today, in fact, consist of a mix of pharmaceuticals unable to weaken the virus and are increasingly inefficient against resistant viral strains in constant development.
Molecular biologist Anna Cereseto is the scientific director of the Normale's research unit that carries out the following of a 'two hybrid' screening utilizing visualization system of HIV-1 for monitoring the interactions between cellular factors and the virus itself.
Other than the Scuola Normale Superior, the consortium includes a research unit from the University of Siena, as well as the Universities of Messina, Perugia, Leuven, KwaZulu in South Africa, Geneva and the Science Academy of the Czech Republic.
