The number of homicides in Italy has been steadily declining while work-related deaths have been rising, according to a new study by the socio-economic think-tank Censis.
Based on official data, the Censis report found that the number of murders in Italy today is one of the lowest in Europe while the number of work-related deaths is the highest in Europe.
Censis said that while in 1995 there were 1,042 homicides in Italy, this fell to 818 in 2000 and 663 in 2006, a 36.4% drop in 11 years.
In 2006, Rome was second only to Paris for the lowest number of murders, 30 in the Italian capital and 29 in the French one, compared to 33 in Brussels, 35 in Athens, 46 in Madrid, 50 in Berlin and 169 in London.
The number of work-related deaths in Italy last year hit 1,170 and this included 918 workplace fatalities, compared to 678 in Germany, 662 in Spain and 593 in France.
