The five Italians kidnapped in Egypt Monday are from Turin, officials in the northwestern Italian city said.

Three are women and two are men, an aide to Turin Prefect Enrico Ricci said.

Three are resident in Turin and two in the surrounding province, the aide said.

He did not identify them.

An unofficial source close to Egyptian tour operators said the kidnappers had asked for a $15 million dollar ransom for the 11 foreign tourists - the five Italians plus five Germans and a Romanian.

The tourists were taken hostage south of the city of Aswan in the far south-west of Egypt near the border with Libya and Sudan, the source said.

Egyptian TV said the kidnapping was carried out by four masked Egyptians.
