Increase in production of authentic ‘Prosciutto Toscano’

Majority of sales to large-scale distributors - More than 70% of Tuscany's famed 'Prosciutto Toscano' (DOP) is sold by large-scale distributors such as supermarkets. Only 5% is exported abroad - primarily to Germany - and the remaining percentage (15%) is sold by wholesalers and other retailers.

Production of 'Prosciutto Toscano' grew 7.5% during the first quarter of 2007. Pre-packaged prosciutto increased from 375,000 units during the first quarter of 2006 to almost 500,000 during January-April 2007, marking a 33.5% increase.

During 2006, the companies in the 'Prosciutto Toscano' consortium reached production of almost 300,000 units (up 3.5% from 2005) valued at 40 million euro.

Nearly 1.4 million pre-packaged units were produced during 2006 - a 40% increase totalling 4.5 million euros.
