Consumer prices continued to climb in Italy this month and sector analysts expect to see the year-on-year inflation rate to hit 3.4% or 3.5% for April, up from 3.3% in March.

Compared to March, the consumer price index is expected to rise by between 0.3% and 0.4% for the month.

If these predictions are confirmed, Italy will have the highest inflation since September 1996.

Rising fuel, utility and foods costs were said to be the most important causes for the hike in inflation.
