Inter bid to build on title

After securing their second consecutive title Sunday, Inter are banking on coach Roberto Mancini to continue the cycle of success in the foreseeable future.

During the celebrations of Inter's 15th scudetto - clinched with five games to spare with a 1-2 win at Siena - chairman Massimo Moratti announced that he was renewing Mancini's contract until 2011, with an option for a further one-year extension.

A contract of that length is highly unusual for a soccer coach - it is football's equivalent of a job for life.

Moratti went even further, describing it as a "marriage".

But after years of spending big and reaping little with a multitude of different coaches, Moratti understandably wants to make long-terms plans with the man who has given him his first league trophies since taking control of the club in 1995.

"The 'marriage' was made a little while ago and this gave us peace of mind," the chairman said.

"Nothing is lacking here. The atmosphere between coach, players and the club is excellent and this will enable us to continue doing well".

The ultimate aim, although no one at the club dare say it, is for Moratti to emulate his father, Angelo, who was chairman of the 'Grande Inter' of the 1960s which won three league titles and two European cups.

The announcement of the contract renewal led Corriere della Sera, Italy's top daily, to compare Mancini with Helenio Herrera, the Argentine coach who led the Grande Inter to glory.

Mancini, however, is not getting carried away.

"I don't know if we'll be able to open a new cycle of success," he said.

"But if we keep on working with great seriousness, as we always do, then I think we will be able to hit big targets in the next few years".

Mancini, who won the league title as a player with Lazio and Sampdoria, took over as Inter coach in 2004.

He won two Italian Cups in his first two years at the San Siro Stadium.

But the club had much bigger ambitions and there were rumours Moratti was considering dumping the softly-spoken 42-year-old when Inter only finished third last season.

Then last summer's Calciopoli scandal changed everything because Inter were awarded the 2006 title after Juventus were relegated and AC Milan were deducted points for match-fixing.

Inter's dominant form on the way to winning this year's championship 'on the field' - they have only lost one game in Serie A this season - has dispelled any lingering doubts about 'Mancio'.

The last time Inter fans saw their team claim the league trophy on the pitch was 1989, under Giovanni Trapattoni.

The Inter players rubbed salt into Juve's Calciopoli wounds during Sunday's celebrations, belting out "We win without stealing" to the same tune English soccer fans use for the chant "You only sing when you're winning".

By clinching the 2007 championship with five games to spare, Inter have matched the record set by Torino in the 1947/48 season and equalled by Fiorentina in 1955/56.

Mancini and Moratti dedicated the triumph to the supporters and to former Italy legend and Inter chairman Giacinto Facchetti, who died last September.
