Inter seek to close in on scudetto

Runaway leaders Inter Milan are seeking to move within one match of the Serie A title Sunday night by beating off-song Palermo at the San Siro Stadium.

Inter are 18 points clear at the top of the table and victory this weekend would give them the chance to wrap things up against second-placed AS Roma next Wednesday - with six games to spare!

It would be the first championship the Milanese giants have won 'on the field of play' since 1989.

Inter are the reigning champs, but this is courtesy of the Calciopoli referee-rigging scandal.

Juventus were stripped of last season's title and relegated and AC Milan were deducted points for their respective parts in the scandal. This meant Inter were bumped up from third to first place.

"We want to beat both Palermo and Roma so we can win this long-awaited scudetto on the pitch," Italy defender Marco Materazzi told Inter's website.

"I have been thinking about it for a year. Let's hope the right time has come".

The Sicilian visitors, meanwhile, are aiming to end a rotten spell of form in order to hang on to fourth place and Italy's last Champions League qualification slot.

Palermo made a strong start to the season and were being billed as potential title contenders at one stage.

But they have not won any of their last nine games.

Palermo coach Francesco Guidolin saidd this week that the club would have been entitled to sack him after Sunday's 3-1 loss at home to Cagliari.

Milan, who are just one point behind in fifth, will leapfrog Palermo in the standings if they beat second-from-bottom Messina away Sunday afternoon and the Sicilians fail to defeat the leaders.

Hernan Crespo and Adriano are expected to lead the Inter attack, as Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a groin strain.

Roma entertain Sampdoria (8th) on Sunday afternoon looking to regain some of the pride lost in Tuesday's 7-1 Champions League quarter-final humiliation at Manchester United.

Third-placed Lazio will be confident of extending an eight-match winning streak at bottom club Ascoli.

On Saturday evening surprise package Empoli (6th) will be out to beat Cagliari (11th) in Sardinia to revive Champions League ambitions dented by last week's 3-1 defeat to Milan.

Another club with an outside chance of Champions League qualification, Fiorentina (7th), play host to Tuscan rivals Siena (15th) on Sunday afternoon.

Fiorentina have 41 points, seven fewer than Palermo.

Parma (18th) are hoping to lift themselves out of the relegation zone with a home win over Catania (14th), who have lost eight of their last 10 matches.

There are three more Serie A games this weekend: Udinese (10th) - Chievo Verona (16th) on Saturday night; and Livorno (12th) - Reggina (17th) and Torino (13th) - Atalanta (9th), both on Sunday afternoon.
