Italian find natural ’superdrug’

Italian researchers have found a natural 'superdrug' that halts miscarriages and could become a barrier to tumours and other diseases.

An international team led by Milan University's Alberto Mantovani and Massimo Locati found that a 'sentinel' they dubbed 'trap-receptor D6' was activated in miscarriages caused by inflammation of the uterus.

"Our results show that in cases of inflammation this receptor plays an essential role in protecting the fetus," Mantovani told the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The research opens up promising scenarios, said the Italian doctors, who worked with top US, American and Croatian clinics.

Locati said "the next step will be to assess genetic variations of the receptor and examine the possibility of manufacturing a 'super-sentinel' against all kinds of inflammations".
