Italian telecommunication equipment maker Sirti has signed a contract with the Libyan Post, Telecommunication & Information Technology Company LPTIC to build a digital terrestrial TV network in the country.

The initial stage of the project will be worth 12 mln euros ($17.6 mln).

Sirti won an international tender with ten bidders.

The company will have to start the network, which will provide 50 channels to the cities of Tripoli, Benghazi and Sirte, within seven months.

Sirti and LPTIC signed an agreement to set up a joint venture company in December 3.

The company will operate in the field of telecommunications and technological infrastructure.

Sirti, the former engineering and installation arm of Italian telecoms giant Telecom Italia, has also signed a deal with Saudi Arabia's major crude oil company Aramco for an undisclosed sum.

Sirti has been active in the two countries since 2006.

Telecom Italia sold Sirti to the Wiretel consortium, led by the Techint steel group and the Benetton group, in 2000.
