World champions Italy climbed back into top spot in FIFA's September world rankings, leapfrogging Argentina and former top dog Brazil, which fell two places to third.
Italy's return to the position it had held for much of the year came thanks to its recent 2-1 win in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Ukraine.
In this month's standings, France fell out of the top five, overtaken by Germany and the Netherlands on the strength of recent Euro 2008 qualification results including France's shock defeat to Scotland in Paris which blew Italy's group wide open.
Scotland leaped nine places to 14th and Ukraine dropped two to 17th.
England surged three places thanks to its wins over Israel and Russia.
