Italy gear up for Belgium

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni on Friday put the finishing touches to the team he has lined up against Belgium Friday night in Italy's last friendly ahead of Euro 2008.

Donadoni is expected to field the same team that should kick off Italy's campaign against the Netherlands in Bern on June 9, with a three-pronged attack featuring Antonio Di Natale as leftside forward just behind Luca Toni and rightwinger Mauro Camoranesi a bit further back.

The midfield looks like being the trusty Milan trio of Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini.

Full backs Christian Panucci and Fabio Grosso will flank the two centre backs, World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro and stopper Andrea Barzagli - who is deputising for Marco Materazzi until 'Matrix' is fully fit.

Donadoni indicated that Serie A top scorer Alessandro Del Piero and former 'bad boy' Antonio Cassano would have a chance to shine even with such a settled starting formation.

He also tried to snuff out media fuss about a supposed clash between the two, who have a similar role for their clubs Juventus and Sampdoria.

''It's understandable that they get the most media attention because they stand out in a certain way from the others.

''But really all the players are on a par,'' Donadoni said.

The coach also reminded the pair that, rather than being free to rove and rest, they would be expected to take defensive positions when Italy doesn't have the ball.

''They're going to have to track back more than they do for their clubs, to keep the team shape,'' he said.

After their Dutch start to the Swiss-Austrian-hosted championships, Italy meet their other two 'Group of Death' opponents, Romania and France, on June 13 and 17 respectively.

The Netherlands played its last pre-tournament friendly on Thursday night, a 1-1 draw against Denmark.

Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and goal-scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy stood out against a resilient Danish side.

But the Dutch defence showed characteristic fragility, reports said.
