Italy interested in organising Euro 2016

Italy is mulling a bid to host Euro 2016, Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) chief Giancarlo Abete said Monday.

A bid could help start ''virtuous circles that lend confidence and investment capacity to our soccer,'' Abete told RAI radio.

Abete said the FIGC would discuss the issue at a board meeting Monday, noting that the deadline for bids is March 9.

He also pointed out that a possible bid by Italy might be favoured by Scotland and Wales having dropped their joint bid.

Italy was beaten by Poland and Ukraine in a bid to host Euro 2012 with the country's crowd policing and soccer violence problems cited as possible causes.

UEFA voted last year to expand Euro 2016 from 16 teams to 24.
