"We are on issue 28 of the magazine now and have covered almost all the regions and main cities of Italy. I say 'almost' because it gradually began to dawn on me that there was one area that was turning into a bit of a black hole as far as submissions were concerned. In fact in three and a half years I have never been offered a feature on this place. I began to get a bit of a thing about it. I asked Italian friends what they knew - and got the same answer - niente. No-one had it on their 'must see' list and I became increasingly intrigued. I had to send someone 'into the interior' to see what they could discover. Stefano Rossini was the man and he relished the task of going somewhere he had never been to and knew little about. 'I will be a new Livingstone, I suppose,' he emailed me. And where did he go? Where is this location truly worthy of the epithet 'best kept secret?'(...)
