To celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth, we take a look at the life and story of Giuseppe Garibaldi, one of the greatest heroes ever known. Statues commemorating him can be found in almost every Italian comune, in Washington, New York and there’s even a street that’s been named after him in London. He was a determined man who literally escaped his death sentence, lost the love of his life and changed the shape of Italy. He was a fearless, courageous man as well as a modest one. When the King offered him a number of rankings and rewards for all he had done, he refused them preferring to retreat quietly to his island.
