I WAS IN VENICE recently on a long weekend with friends and we always seemed to end up in Piazza San Marco at the end of the day, at one of the wonderful (and overpriced) bars with tables outside. We would sip caffè, nibble on biscotti and unwind from the pounding of the busy streets by sitting and gazing at the passers-by but also marvel at the craftsmanship of the Torre dell’Orologio. How did it operate? Were there little Italian men inside? Who was the person that actually made it all work? We find out on page 24 when we meet Alberto Gorla, the wizard who took on the clock tower’s restoration.
