Italy still want win in Scotland

Italy still want win in ScotlandItaly won't be playing for the draw against Scotland that would be enough to see them through to Euro 2008, coach Roberto Donadoni said after Scotland's 2-0 loss in Georgia on Wednesday night eased the pressure on the Azzurri for the November 17 clash in Glasgow.

"We can't go to Scotland for the draw," Donadoni said.

"We must go there with the same winning attitude because we aren't capable of calculating.

"On the tactical level, too, nothing will change".

Scotland's defeat means Italy are still a point behind them - but now have a game in hand.

With Italian victory in their final home game against the Faroe Islands on November 21 virtually certain, a draw in Scotland's last match should clinch qualification alongside the French, who beat Lithuania 2-0 Wednesday to regain the group lead by a point.

"It's undeniable that Georgia did us a big favour but I half expected it," Donadoni went on.

"I saw Scotland's home leg and they didn't deserve to win - a long-range goal in the 92nd minute decided it".

"The group is back on a fine edge again. Things have changed since the two Scottish wins against the French".

Donadoni was asked if he feared a do-or-die Scottish assault now that the tables have been turned and it is the home side, rather than Italy, in a must-win situation.

He replied: "I don't know if Scotland will be more fired up, all I'm thinking about is my own team. But Georgia showed Scotland is beatable".

Donadoni was speaking after a 2-0 friendly win over South Africa in Siena thanks to two late goals by Shakhtar Donetsk's Cristiano Lucarelli.

As well as the dependable ex-Livorno man, Donadoni indicated that Alberto Gilardino's half-hour display in the second half could have put the Milan striker - resurgent after a double strike against Lazio in the league - in the frame for the Scotland game.

"Gilardino didn't just do well when he came on. He did very well," Donadoni said.

Meanwhile France, buoyant again after their shock home defeat to Scotland last month, are hoping Italy will beat Scotland to make their own qualification secure no matter how they do in Ukraine on November 21.

Striker Thierry Henry, who scored both goals against Lithuania, said Thursday: "I'll be rooting for Italy".

Italy beat Scotland 2-0 with goals from Luca Toni when the sides first met in March.

The on-fire Bayern Munich striker will be crucial to the Glasgow game too.
