Italy unchanged for Scotland

Italy coach Nick Mallett on Wednesday named an unchanged side for Italy's final Six Nations match at home to Scotland on Saturday (1300 GMT).

Mallet has kept faith with centre Gonzalo Canale despite key handling errors in last week's 25-13 defeat by France and last month's record 47-8 loss to Wales.

''I'm not the sort of coach who makes changes if a player has a bad game,'' Mallett said.

Italy have lost their previous four matches and need to beat Scotland by at least five points to hand them the Wooden Spoon.

Since they joined the tournament in 2000 the Italians have earned three Wooden Spoons but they have won at least one game each year since 2005.

The pressure is on Mallett's men to perform against the Scots, who beat England 15-9 last week to secure their first win of the championship.

The Scots beat Italy 18-16 in last year's World Cup to stymie Italy's hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals for the first time ever.

But revenge would not be an issue on Saturday, Mallett said.

''I'm not looking for payback. It's the first time I will have played against them''.

Mallett said it would not be an easy game for Italy.

He said he was ''very impressed'' with the ''spirit and organisation'' the Scots showed in their Calcutta Cup triumph.

Italy have beaten Scotland twice, including last year's 37-17 triumph at Murrayfield that marked their first win away from Rome's Stadio Flaminio.

The Azzurri went on to beat Wales 23-20 at the Flaminio to pick up two straight wins for the first time.

But Scotland won 13-10 on their last visit to Rome two years ago.

Prop Martin Castrogiovanni has been confirmed despite being forced off with a shoulder injury against France after scoring his side's only try.

Andrea Masi remains at fly-half despite criticism of his kicking game.

Young, impressive place kicker Andrea Marcato wins his third cap at full back while Kaine Robertson makes his 30th appearance on the wing opposite Ezio Galon.

Mirco Bergamasco again partners Canale in the centre while Andrea Masi gets his fifth straight start at fly half, winning his 40th cap.

Simon Picone will be behind the scrum for the third time while captain and No 8 Sergio Parisse gets his 53rd cap at the age of 24.

Tall flankers Alessandro Zanni and Josh Sole have again been chosen to act as line-out alternatives to locks Marco Bortolami and Carlo Antonio Del Fava.

Experienced props Martin Castrogiovanni and Andrea Lo Cicero, Italy's record caps holder, flank young hooker Leonardo Ghiraldini who made a potentially try-making blindside break against France before Canale spilled his pass.

On the Italy bench are hooker Fabio Ongaro, props Carlos Nieto and Salvatore Perugini, back row forward Jacobus Erasmus, scrum half Pietro Travagli and the two three quarters Enrico Patrizio and Alberto Sgarbi.

For Scotland, winger Simon Danielli is set to make his first start in three years replacing wing Rory Lamont, out with a facial fracture.

Hooker Fergus Thomson earns his first cap after Ross Ford was ruled out with ankle ligament damage sustained against England.

Metronomic place-kicker Chris Paterson stays at fly half while Dan Parks starts from the bench again.
