The UEFA draw in Nyon on Friday put Inter Milan against defending European champions Manchester United, while Turin's Juventus will face Chelsea and AS Roma will meet Arsenal.
Observers said that both the Italian and English teams probably would have preferred not meeting each other at this stage because all are strong sides.
England's other team in the Champions League, Liverpool, will not have an easy time of it either after it was put against Real Madrid.
Inter are currently on top of the Serie A while in England Man Utd, due to a false start to the season, are third, six points behind Premier League leader Liverpool and one behind second-placed Chelsea, but with a game in hand.
Arsenal are fifth, eight points out of first place, while in Italy Roma find themselves stalled in the middle of the Serie A standings, 16 points behind Inter but safely above the relegation zone.
Juventus is second in Serie A, six points form Inter.

The first team listed will host the first leg to be held February 24 and 25, while the return matches will be staged March 10 and 11.
The first legs for Roma and Inter will be on the 24th, while Juve will play on the 25th, while in March Juve will play on the 10th and roma and Inter on the 11th.
